This handsome dude is one of the many Tom’s we have here at the Homestead this year. He is a heritage breed known as Narragansett. This breed is a cross between the wild turkeys of the east coast and domestic turkeys brought to this country by European colonists. They are somewhat rare – only coming back into popularity in recent years. They forage well, prefer to roost in trees, and unlike many heritage breeds, tend not to wander very far from home.
If you are considering raising a turkey, this breed tends to be quite calm with a great temperament.
He is as gentle as he is gorgeous! Love our big boy!
